The Golden Lion

01

A Golden Lion Marmoset is loose somewhere in the city.

This is my only journal entry for today. I’m not sure exactly when it started, but over the years I acquired the habit of reading the newspaper on a daily basis. My routine is as follows: I wake up at 6am, put my housecoat on, make myself an espresso, and collect the day’s copy of The Calgary Herald from my front porch, before reading it over about an hour. Before long, I began recording particularly interesting news pieces. Now, I have a journal full of events and memories. Today’s only notable item is that the Calgary Zoo’s sole Golden Lion Marmoset has somehow escaped its cage. This is of significant importance because of the vulnerability of the animal. Beyond the IUCN’s rating of the creature as an endangered species, the Golden Lion Marmoset is low on the feeding chain, and native to southeastern Brazil. It is in certain danger in the cold and rocky climate of Calgary, Alberta, outside of it’s simulated environment at the zoo, of course.
